About My Clients

I enjoy working with adults whether new to therapy or those having had previous experience. I work effectively with with a range of problems from debilitating depression or anxiety, relationship problems, or those who are wanting fine tuning and personal growth. With couples, I help to illuminate how problems are co-created and are also informed by each person's history. I have developed a successful protocol to help couples repair conflicts or misunderstandings without anger or withdrawal.

My Background and Approach

My approach is an amalgam of different schools of thought that have brought positive results in my work. My training as a Gestalt therapist has taught me the importance of the present moment, self-awareness, connection with our body, healthy boundary functions, and experiential learning (doing rather than talking about). My relational psychoanalytic training has informed me the importance of our relational history in the making of who we are today. It has provided me with an understanding of what is needed for healthy development and how to recognize derailments in our development and repair them. Effective therapy requires 1) Insight into the elements that have shaped us as people, 2) That we feel emotionally understood and safe to bring forth and integrate painful emotions we have all had to suppress from an imperfect childhood, 3) To begin to see, through experiments, that the world today is not a replication of our family, and that we are adults with strengths and resources.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

What makes practicing therapy for me meaningful and gratifying, is that we are all, not only capable of healing and personal growth at any age, but ready and poised for both when the conditions to do so are present. If an indoor plant is sequestered in a corner without light or water, it will die. However, once the plant is moved to a window providing light and given water...it will flourish. The therapy I provide is a collaborative process that always respects the needs, working pace, and goals of each person. Feeling emotionally understood at a deep level is central to effective therapy and it creates a safe relational experience that promotes internal reflection, receptiveness to an outside perspective, and wisdom to emerge within. This therapeutic alliance will lead us to discover new ways of seeing ourselves and our world and can lead to the change we desire.
